These miniature kites are not based on any set design and are therefore unique.

A challenge met.

What do you do when your materials present a challenge? Meet the challenge of course.

I made this Shield kite freehand, to allow the different sized stripes of the print to appear as color blocks on the sail.

It’s pretty basic, but I’m happy with this little flier.

Red, white, and blue star.

The last time that I stopped by the Dollar Tree, I splurged and picked up two packages of napkins. I was so excited about the pink and zebra striped print, I didn’t even mention the print I found in the display of Memorial Day supplies.

Unfortunately the print won’t be as fun as I first hoped, most of the stars aren’t square with the stripes, and the stripes don’t have consistent widths. Miniature kites always provide a challenge, and sometimes more than one.

Here is the first of the kites from the print. Despite being a Star kite, it is actually a larger, freehand shape, to allow for a border around the Henna style blue star from the print.

Easter is nearly here

Here’s the second freehand Easter egg kite.

It’s a little bigger, because I cut a larger border.

An egg for Easter

With Easter just around the corner, I decided to try making a flying Easter egg to give to a preschooler friend of my youngest son (I’ll make one for him tomorrow).

It turned out pretty well, if I say so myself.

The tail for this one even matched the kite properly because my wife got tired of seeing kites with off color tails and handed over her three cases of the embroidery thread that I’m using for tails.

Freehand butterflies

After the success yesterday, I decided to try another butterfly from the same napkin.

This started out as a 2 inch Sotich Shield, and then I trimmed the sail down to avoid the same lettering.

Now, I’m off to run a Pinewood Derby for Cub Scout Pack 53 in Waldport.

I’ve wanted to do something with the butterflies on some cocktail napkins for several weeks.

After doing several kites from templates, I decided to brave making one off template (freehand) to avoid getting some stray lettering onto the sail.

This little beauty is the result. I’m very pleased with  how well it turned out, and how well it flies.
